Super Monkeyball // iPhone

Super Monkeyball is, as always, simple, addictive and frustrating.
If you’ve played before you’ll be familiar with the set-up and this version is much the same; 5 worlds each containing 11 stages - which are unlocked linearly. The accelerometer controls, although natural, are difficult to master and you’ll find yourself falling off the edges. Stick with it though, as it does get slightly easier as you get used to the ‘crazy’ tippy action. That aside, the graphics and gameplay are impressive and way better than anything on a phone to date - which kinda sets the tone for iPhone as a potentially ace gaming platform.
It’s the first big game for the iPhone, and although a little clumsy, it’s pretty good.

Gaming + Reality
Quake Simpsons
Like I said.
Spork Swords
The Spore Creature Creator was released this week, and guess what..? Yep, it’s turned into a cock-fest. The ‘creature creating community’ have crafted dozens of new lifeforms, all with massive boners. If you search YouTube for “spore penis” you’ll return about 150 vid’s, including Penisman, the Penizaur, the Peenisaurus, the Penis Goblin and the the oddly named Penis Creature #1029438.
Never fails.
If you’re not a child, do not despair: the creator has spawned over 250,000 real monsters after just one day.
Ninja Gaiden 2 // Xbox 360

Having recently completed both the excellent God of War and Devil May Cry 4, I was strangely drawn to Ninja Gaiden 2, a game I wouldn’t normally buy. It’s a gory hack ‘n’ slash type affair, not unlike the above, only it’s rubbish - unless you’re a die hard fan probably. I’m not (a fan), so I only managed up to the second boss before I became tired and put it on eBay.
Ninja Gaiden 2 is one of those games that basically makes your thumb hurt. It’s all about button mashing, which in my case is very random, and therefore unrewarding. On top of that the camera is jumpy and frustrating, it doesn’t look as good as everyone says it does and it feels very dated.
To cut a long story short; if you want a good hack ‘n’ slash (even if you generally don’t like them), go DMC4 or Chains.
Grid // Xbox 360
Grid is basically Toca vs Dirt, cleverly combining both arcade and simulation elements to create a very solid, incredible looking racer. The game offers a number of different racing disciplines; GT, pro-tuned races, demolition derby and even a full (real time) 24-hour Le Mans, if you can hack it. There’s loads of tracks and cars as well as a whole host of multiplayer options. And it’s a game that’s blessed with incredible attention to detail, like the fact that the menu woman actually calls me Nathan (which is my name, obviously).
But it’s not any of those things that make this a stand out game. The thing that does that is the unrivaled sensation of speed that Codemasters’ Neon engine spits out. It’s faster and more exhilarating than any other racer I’ve played on any of the next gen consoles. The action moves at an eye-watering pace and there are some well implemented touches, such as camera tilt as you take corners at speed, that serve only to enhance the experience.
It’s a great progression for both it’s parents, and although not offering quite the level of customisation available in Forza 2, the seriousness of GT5 or the on-line options of PGR4 - in my book it gives all a fair run for their money. A fine achievement and I’d say a good bet in the race for 2008’s best driving game.
Urban Takeover
UrbanTakeover is some kind of an ARG in which you claim spots/territory by putting up stickers (in real life) and sending a text message or entering the address at the site.
I just claimed London, but I am still a bit confused. If anyone can help me understand, I’d be very grateful.
Third Person // First Person
The Third Eye is a device conceived by Japanese designer Takehito Etani (although I’ve seen it before). The contraption offers the user a third person view of themselves via a one-eyed goggle with a 2-inch LCD monitor and a surveillance camera.
According to the bloke that made it; “The device turns the user into the character that he/she is controlling and real space is transformed into virtual space.”
I wish I got paid to come up with shit like this…
