NOKIA Bots

Nokia has released a collection of OS add-ons for the N97 phones called NokiaBots; essentially systems that run in the background collect data on usage patterns and behaviors. By developing a sense of a user’s routines, the bots can start to automatically reconfigure the users mobile experience to provide a more personalized (useful) experience, reorganizing applications, suggesting alarm times and automating certain tasks for a user.

At this point, NokiaBots help with the following: Profile Bot automates profile changes during meetings. Alarm Bot automatically suggests alarms and profile changes based on wake up behavior. Shortcut Bot organizes frequently used applications and shortcuts and Battery Bot lets you know if your battery needs to be charged.

I agree, it’s not that much right now – but I love this. I love that we are enabling technology to learn about our habits and assist us with dull chores as a result – like a kinda huge big LastFM for your whole life. It won’t be long before we’ll all be able to delegate everyday tasks to an intelligent virtual assistant that can coordinate, execute and simplify our tasks. In addition technologies that enable more free-form interaction (translation and speech recognition) are also improving and are being adopted widely. Virtual assistants that can leverage these inputs as well as learned knowledge and behavior will begin to integrate and expand into our online lives, services and tools. And, lets face it, they’ll be pretty useful, especially with the stuff we use to manage our lives – like booking, buying, reserving, reminding and scheduling. As we build trust (and relationships) with those digital “partners” the more we’ll be able to put on their to-do lists – and that, in my book, is a very good thing.

Examples like NOKIA Bots prove the technology and ecosystem needed to build this stuff is obviously already here. It will, of course, take several years before we get to some of the above examples – but clearly (and happily) we are well on our way.

Nice on NOKIA Bots here.

All good. Think that Siri is the most advanced in the race to ‘virtual personal assistant’. Saw a demo on the iPhone in the US and it was v v impressive.
