IdiotTV

Desperate times means desperate measures for ITV. The mass adoption of PVRs (and probably the internet?) means less and less people are actually watching ad’s before TV shows. So the struggling broadcaster is trialling a number of new ways to try and make advertising work.

The most ludicrous of these is an idea called “automatically placed overlay advertising”, which basically inserts advertising messaging directly into ‘white spaces’ on the actual video footage.

The technology works by scanning the picture for a suitable space, and then cunningly slaps a brand message in it. The messaging can appear on any clean area deemed large enough by the machines, walls and sky being the obvious recipients.

Look ITV, the simple reason people don’t want to watch ad’s isn’t because some technology is making it difficult, it’s because, mostly, they are shit. What you actually need to be doing is encouraging relevant people to find more interesting ways to engage and make cash from your TV. By continuing along the ‘lets force them’ path, all you’ll ensure is that ad’s are not the only thing people no longer want to watch.

Genius.

ITV are, quite frankly, witless buffoons, they are doomed with this kind of inept, ill considered thinking. Further ITV’s reliance on tawdry reality shows and other 10th rate ‘entertainment’ will further drive advertisers away as audiences flee in search of better content, increasingly available gratis on things like the BBC player.

I think it’s good night Vienna time, don’t you?
