Lurpak has partnered with Last.fm to create an online music tool that will generate playlists based on what dish a visitor to their website/cook is cooking. Simply input the dish and the site will generate a random playlist based on that dish.

Hooray!

Or maybe not.

On the surface it’s a good idea, based on the ‘buzz’ created by the blog/advertising community, but I’m struggling with the behavioural insight. And whether or not it will actually sell any margarine/butter?

My question is this: When did anyone (in the UK) last look to a margarine brand to provide them with music? Not only with music, but music that they believe to be better than their own (usual) choice. Or, in other words, how many people really take their laptops into the kitchen and instinctively look up FMCG websites to provide them with world music radio?

Not many.

So, without any behavioural insight, I can only assume that the ad wizards will refer to the ‘buzz’ that this kind of tech savvy idea produces as the reason for spending the clients money. Sadly, I fear, that ‘buzz’ will make waves only on sites like this – sites that are read by a very small majority of the supermarket shopper community.

If I ran Lurpak I’d seriously be asking any agency that suggested a concept like this to base their fee on sales, not ‘buzz’. That would quickly determine the true value of an idea like Foodbeats.

Oh, and while I’m on the subject, why can’t I actually sample, buy or be directed to a place that I can get the product? I cook, surely I’m exactly the right audience?

Coming up with a ‘digital advertising’ idea is easy, coming up with a ‘digital advertising’ idea that actually affects the bottom line of a business is a little more difficult.

Fair?
