Death Proof // DVD // Borrowed
There are three things I always like about Tarantino films: the style, the dialogue and the cast. It usually doesn’t bother me much if the plot is a bit thin, as long as he gets the those three right, I’ll mostly enjoy the film
Case in point: Death Proof.
A fantastic homage to 70s exploitation movies, right down to the poor quality print, shoddy editing and missing frames. Skillful direction and cinematography, plus style, dialogue and cast (as mentioned), combine to make this an ace flick. Plus, of course, all that is, and all that surrounds, ‘Stuntman Mike’ (Kurt Russel). His clothes, his hair, his car and his perverse vehicular homicidal tendencies. Everything about him is just brilliant. He’s a vicious and immensely satisfying pedal-to-the metal-sex-pest baddie.

There are very few people that can get away with a film like this. Tarantino does, and he does it pretty much without a plot. He doesn’t really need one, he just adds all the above to some ‘hot chicks’, a decent soundtrack, several (classic) muscle-cars and some truly staggering stunt work. And bingo, he’s got himself ‘one hell of a ride’.
Awesome.
