Anomaly | Designs of the Year Award

Today The Design Museum announced it’s Design Awards, or ‘the Oscars of the design world’ as they say on their pipe. The awards showcase the most innovative and progressive designs from around the world, spanning seven categories: Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphics and Transport and Product. This years the nominations includes little things like the 787 Dreamliner by Boeing, The Duchess of Cambridge’s Wedding Dress, Xbox Kinect and the Olympic 2012 Velodrome. Oh, and this – from us:

Wow.
Um.
Wow.
A high profile judging panel will decide the best entries in each of the seven categories. Category award winners and the overall winner of the Design of the Year Award 2012 will be announced at an Awards event in April 2012. The winners will be announced at an Awards Night held at the Design Museum on 24 April.

Nice work Alfred Keith, Kevin, Teagan + Unit9.

rubbishcorp® CargoCollective
I built a portfolio site on CargoCollective at the weekend. Following on from some activity last week I’m gonna take all my work stuff offa this blog. If you’re thinking about putting your work up, CargoCollective is a brilliant platform. It took a while to size and write everything but the implementation was dead easy, just needed a tiny bit of HTML – which is about my limit.

Hiring: Digital WingMan/Woman Required
We (Anomaly) are looking for a Wingperson to come work closely with me and the rest of the team across all of our clients and business. As that Digital Wingperson you will help generate and realize ideas to the standard expected by Anomaly and her clients. You must be a smart thinker with exceptional design sense, a fantastic working knowledge of all things digital and an eye for simply expressing interaction, ideas and experiences – with some capability in motion preferred. Two/three years experience a must (doesn’t have to be agency).
If that sounds like something you could do?
Then give us a shout.
Anomaly Vs Sony Music | Vaccines Video
Today sees the launch of our first project with Sony Music – the fan based music video for The Vaccines Wetsuit. The video is complied of #vaccinesvideo Instagr.am photos taken at festivals throughout the summer as well as film shot by Poppy De Villeneuve. Massive shout out to Alfred who pushed and pushed and pushed to realise the vision.
What I’m most proud of is that this project clearly demonstrates one of the things I love about Anomaly. Not only did we did we deliver an innovative fan based music video but, when faced with the fact that we didn’t have enough money to bring our idea to life, we worked with one of our other clients to secure a Vaccines gig at their new club – the fee for which enabled the project to happen.
Enjoy.

onethousandcranes
The onethousandcranes site we did with some friends and artists just reached the 1000 cranes folded mark. y00t! Thank you to everyone who got involved and made a crane. The site will stay live so if you haven’t folded one yet, or you want to go again, please do. There are now 48 different designs with new ones still coming in – the latest being from a certain Mr Calvin Klien…

Anomaly Vs Converse | Desire ♫ Video
As I’ve said before Converse is an Anomaly. It is a Fashion brand that so ingrained in culture doesn’t really need ‘advertising’ – it simply needs to continue deepening it’s connection to that culture. If you create culture – you don’t have to interrupt it. Our job (as Anomaly) is simply to connect the brand to it’s audience via that cultural passion point (music) and to not let any unnecessary messaging get in the way. And that’s what Converse Connectivity is all about – creating stuff that connects people through music – the connectivity chain (below) and the artist collaborations we’ve done to date do exactly that.
This time we wanted to take it one step further and literally connect the audience to the music. And so was born Desire, a connected live action music video featuring Paloma Faith, Graham Coxon and Bill Ryder-Jones along side you and two of your mates.
Three musicians, three friends, one connected video.
Go star yourself.
y00t!
One Thousand Cranes | Anomaly & Friends For Japan
Anomaly have teamed up with some friends and artists from around the world to create a site that enables beautiful designs to be downloaded and folded into origami cranes. For a small donation we ask that you download a design and follow the instructions to make a crane. We’d like as many people as possible to fold a crane and then place it somewhere prominent so that it might inspire others to also focus on those in the grip of tragedy.
‘A Japanese tradition tells that a wish may be granted in response to someone with the devotion to fold one thousand origami cranes. This project seeks to draw on that ancient healing and show that the emotional blow received can be responded to through the strength of solidarity and human compassion.’
I don’t ask much of you lot, but can I please ask that you all visit our site, donate, fold and share with all (and I mean all) your contacts and friends. Please think of any way you can to help get this site out there.
Massive thank you Unit 9 for taking on the project and building it in such a short space of time. Plus huge big shout to Alfred, Tegan, Harry, Kevin, Keith, Breed, Blinkart, Dutch Uncle, Jelly, Ben Kay, Acco Ozawa, Rebecca Gaon, Picasso Pictures, Tess Birch, Actop, Tom Uglow, Laura Quick, Matt Lyon, Todd Selby, Tokyo Plastic, Zeitguised and the constantly incoming illustrators + help! On top of that I’d also like to thank all the Creative Socials that offered to help but were not needed – you know who you are.

Converse ★ Anomaly | Cello Graff
Short film about one of the Graff techniques we (Anomaly) employed for the Converse Bernard Sumner (Joy Division/ New Order), Hot Chip and Hot City track promotion. The idea being that anyone can create a canvas anywhere by wrapping big huge cellophane inbetween two posts. The above is one of 6 that appeared outside music venues across the UK.

Converse ★ Anomaly
Converse is an Anomaly. It is a Fashion brand that is adored by pretty much everyone. Yes, there are other brands that share those qualities – but how many do you know that are proudly worn by the old and the young alike? Teenagers would usually give a very wide berth to a brand worn by their parents – that’s not the case with Converse. The brand’s longstanding and deep-rooted connection with music puts it at the heart of culture, regardless of time.

That makes it a gift to market. A brand that is so ingrained in culture doesn’t really need campaign ‘advertising’ – it simply needs to continue deepening it’s connection to that culture. If you create culture – you don’t have to interrupt it*. Our job (as Anomaly) is simply to connect the brand to it’s audience via that cultural passion point and to not let unnecessary messaging get in the way.
And what better way to do that than by borrowing a few heavyweight music icons (established/current/upcoming) and creating a ‘pop-up’ band/record/video. And then, simply add a healthy sprinkling of music style marketing on top of that collaboration. So that’s what we did. We married Bernard Sumner (New Order/Joy Division), Alexis Taylor & Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) and (Hot City) to create this (free-to-download) track and video (the latter of which was launched this morning):
Sort of like becoming a record label.
And as a sort-of record label we employed a collective of graffiti artists to create huge big murals in key cities (their cities) across the country that feature the musicians involved.

We also took over key locations with the bands imagery.

Plus, just to be sure, we invited upcoming acts including Chew Lips and Hudson Mohawke to remix the track. And we activated student unions and created bespoke collateral for retailers.
I’d be surprised if you haven’t encountered the work.
Watch this space as we have a second track, featuring Graham Coxon, Paloma Faith and Bill Rider Jones, formerly of the Coral, that’ll be released in January.

Viney St Swithins Vs The News
Our footy club is getting a bit of coverage.
YouTube Channel here.
The league starts August 28th…
Anomaly Vs Viney St Swithins

Anomaly are working with Viney St Swithins FC to develop and promote their following worldwide. The club plays in the Northern Gloucestershire Senior League 2 and were placed 12th of 17 last season – obviously we’re aiming for a promotion this season. We’ve designed a club crest, kitted the team out in Umbro and got them a new sponsor – in the form of Sony. The idea is to see if we can help Viney St Swithins improve and grow as a club and to follow the story of how that develops. Manager Simon James: “Anomaly’s interest in us is certainly not financial, they just want to see how they can influence a small football club. It’s exciting for us, but we don’t really know how things are going to pan out.”
This Saturday, Viney’s first-team will play their opening friendly at home to a Forest Green Rovers XI (3pm). The Forest Green side is expected to include mostly reserves and under-18s.
Follow their progress on Facebook and Twitter.
More to follow…

I ♥ Anomaly.
