This is pretty sweet. It’s a multi lens camera that enables the focus of the photographs created by it to be adjusted when the photo is displayed on a web. Basically meaning you don’t have to focus the camera or worry about what mode you’re in or anything. Just point and click and everything, and they mean everything, can be done after.

A good/dramatic example of its use would be that of a lost or abducted person. With Theia, the cops could search cell phones the world over for the individual using facial recognition tech. In an ideal world, one in which the technology was ubiquitous, if the person had been photographed they would be found.

As interesting as this tech is, the ‘tech being ubiquitous’ issue is obviously a huge one. I can’t help but wonder why would anyone willingly become a part of a passive spy network?

Above is a little idea I was working up for a bit of rubbishcorp® PR. Basically it was a site that enabled Instagramers to grid their photo’s and print them out as a high rez files for their walls.

A project that explores the invisible terrain of WiFi networks in urban spaces by light painting signal strength in long-exposure photographs. A four-metre long measuring rod with 80 points of light reveals cross-sections through WiFi networks using light-painting.

I’ve been pissing about a little with my Sony NEX-5 as a result of an accidental discovery I made while shooting in the (mostly excellent) Panorama mode. When used to shoot distant landscapes (as intended) the mode/camera does really well at stitching the scene. However, if you compose the shot with an additional foreground subject, the camera/processor seemingly can’t handle the crossover and produces some weird slicing style results which are arguably a bit more interesting than the straight aren’t-I-clever panorama stitches.

Stop motion form and colour, using light painting techniques. Each frame (photograph) is a long exposure photo, with exposures reaching up to 20 seconds. The lights are run by an Arduino controlled via bluetooth to drive a stepper motor. This motor controls the movements of the lights remotely from Processing.

Orange is aiming for the Guinness World Record for the ‘most people tagged in an online photo’ with this 1,300-megapixel picture captured at around 3.45pm on 23 June right infront of the Pyramid Stage. When you find yourself, (as several of our office seemed to have over the weekend), just drag the tag marker to the relevant position in the huge big photo and tag it.

The NEX-5 is apparently the smallest APS-C hybrid digital camera yet, delivering image quality to match a digital SLR. The camera has interchangeable (alpha) lenses, a 14-megapixel APS-C format sensor, flip-up screen, background blur, twilight mode, continous shooting at 7 frames per second and full HD movies with live autofocus. The interface is pretty simple (kinda like a Cyber-Shot), with navigation mainly via a scroll wheel on the digital display. There’s also a handy “shooting tips” function – which is essentially an in-camera manual for the photographically retarded like myself. Shooting wise, the camera is very responsive. I love the old-school shutter action and the lack of lag – plus the continuous shooting setting is freaking awesome.

I’m no photographer, but this is by far the best (compact) camera I have used. The features, settings and image quality are top-notch, without the bulk and complexity of a DSLR. If you’re thinking of buying a new compact and you can stretch to around £500 – I’d highly recommend you get yourself an NEX-5.

“A Thousand Shades of Gray” is the unmasking of the scars produced by a digital scalpel and brush. The cost of the corrections of the original photo that attempts to fulfill  societies ideals and demands. When this material is taken from its original context it can become frightening, raw, fascinating and even enchanting in its naked absurdity.
